70[Name removed by Sirelo] came over to inspect our place in order to furnish us with a quotation and she was both friendly and knowledgeable. My wife observed she took the time to properly look things over whereas other companies had people drop by quickly to then simply shoot off a standard quotation via email. [Name removed by Sirelo] also advised us on the Customs process and to consider depreciation when assigning a dollar value to my electronic items, which may seem obvious but I felt she genuinely cared.
I wasn't around much on packing day as I took my daughter out for a walk, but my wife said the packing team was very efficient. I found one thing odd, however. My office chair was packed without being dismantled in a custom make-shift box, whereas the small base of our coffee table was dismantled even though it was small. The only reason I remember this is because the base was a pain to reassemble. Out of all our items only 1 ceramic bowl got chipped along the way, which I find totally reasonable as we had a lot of fragile dining/kitchen items.
IGL Relocation did a great job to minimize our customs duty. We had a bunch of leftover clothing and scarves from a previous failed business, which we honestly had no intention to sell in India. IGL was able to convince the Customs team to not charge us for these items. The Customs officers appraised my old Sony 50' TV at the price of a new (unbranded) 50' and my 1996 Bose surround system at 50k INR (600 USD), but unfortunately IGL couldn't talk them down. On the flip side my iMac worth over 2k USD was only appraised at 8k INR (100 USD), so you win some and you lose some. Computers and TVs are taxed at 35% versus 15% for the home theater system, so I definitely came out on top. IGL also demonstrated integrity by advising me that I had overpaid and returned the excess to my bank account.
There was a slight delay in the delivery of my belongings from the port in Mumbai to Goa, because there were some payment issues between Nayak and IGL. Honestly I think this delay was partly my fault because I had overlooked an email from Nayak and delayed remitting the final payment to them. They may have in turn delayed paying IGL.
The team that unloaded the trolley and brought all 124 boxes up 1 flight of stairs to our apartment was friendly and efficient. They only took a short break for 5 minutes the whole time. They offered to unpack our items, but we declined their offer because we wanted to unpack things systematically and put them away.Read more
The total shipping volume estimate needed to be revised upward but was within an acceptable range.
