177This truncated review (due to char limits) is for my move from Singapore to India in July 2024.
Until they take your money they are extremely courteous, responsive and willing to assist. My POC was [Name removed by Sirelo] in SG and [Name removed by Sirelo] in India who both promised 24/7 round the clock assistance.
Now the Bad. Right after they pack your belongings, they demand the full payment upfront. From the minute the money is received a few things happen
a) [Name removed by Sirelo] immediately passes all responsibility to [Name removed by Sirelo] at the India office, presumably to focus on his next sale
b) Suddenly calls stop being answered and you start hearing assorted “It’s a public holiday in SG/IN” “I didn’t have my phone with me all day” and seeing all your whatsapp messages going unread.
c) They start with proactive scare tactics “Sir, you will have to pay customs on everything, its not our responsibility” , “We cant help weekends and public holidays, you will have to pay demurrage charges” “Ship came early, charges start from today then there will be prot + container + xyz charges”.
As an apparently professional relocation business, they do not tell you what their responsibilities are or mine are to prevent all these charges, they just start with the disclaimers, finger pointing at everyone but themselves and obtuse circular statements. Major red flag.
The first red flag I had was in Singapore. We were told that packing was scheduled over two days and we planned accordingly. 80% of goods to be taken on day 1 and a few things like chairs and beds to be taken on day 2. They however realized that on day 1 they could pack everything in one day and wouldn’t have to come back tomorrow. Then the absolute lies started.
a) The first lie was that a ship was suddenly and miraculously available the next day at 7 am so they had to pack everything. Or else they had no guarantee that my goods could ever leave. Ahem.
b) The second lie was them promising pack everything the same day. We had paid for custom crating for TV’s lamps and a mirror. After we pushed back, they confessed that they would not have been able crate the goods and ship on the same day. Utterly unprofessional.
The second red flag. I specifically told them not to pack my bag (which they marked with white tape) as it had my passports and cash. No prizes for guessing that they did pack it and then just simply refused to even answer my questions about it blaming me for it! By the time I realized it was gone, the ship had left port, and I had to run around and get an emergency passport issued that cost me $400. When I retrieved my bad in India the bags zippers were opened, the passports were there but the cash (1000 USD + 150 SGD) was missing. I have on record from them that Customs did not open my bag nor did their India team. When I asked them about it the first thing they did was to blame me saying that I should not have packed cash, when they were the ones that packed it against my express instructions.
Additionally, when I first told [Name removed by Sirelo] about the missing cash his first response was that he would immediately file a police report as it was a serious matter. Now predicatbly he has backtracked and is ignoring his commitment asking me to write in to the generic email iD of his company.
Third red flag. I had specifically instructed them (on record) to file my move under a scheme called “Transfer of Residence” which exempts returning citizens to pay Customs duties on household goods upto 4500 USD. One of the requirements is that I have my passports which they had packed. I asked them to let me know the alternate process to file this “TOR” since I didn’t have my passport. Again a new nightmare. Their first response was “Lets file under your wifes name but then youll have to pay full tax and theire will eb additional charges for name change etc etc”. The second response was “Lets just file under your name and you pay tax”. I realized then that their utter apathy and laziness was going to cost me. As an apparently reputable company they either had no idea, or were unwilling to make any effort, to know the alternative process for when a passport is lost. After much demanding (all on record) they finally asked me for some documents after about 6 days and kept trying to blame everyone but themselves. This delay in their part to send me supporting documents cost me demurrage charges of 50,000 INR (approx. $800)
Fourth red flag. The documents they gave me to sign had a Power of Attorney, item lists, passport copies etc but it also had a document (image attached with this review) that asked me to sign full responsibility for any damages to the container?!? The total liability was close to $80,000. Yes $80,000! The customer never even sees the container!!! The relo company takes the goods then loads int onto a container and then at destination removes the goods from the container and then puts it on a truck. When I questioned them on this their answer was that it was standard practice! Only after I told them that I checked my previous contracts and friends relocation contracts and there was nothing of the sort did they remove it by making it sound like it was a big favour to me! This reeks of a scam.
Fifth red flag. Once the goods arrived and I have already relived a fair amount of nightmare) Shyla (India rep of Across) calls me and says that I have to pay 1,50,000 INR (Approx $2300) of tax. Without giving me any reasons or official documentation. When I asked for documentation the standard scare tactic of “We only have this sir if you don’t pay fast it will get delayed and then additional port, container, customs charges will occur and we are not responsibly”. Now I shouldn’t have to pay tax as we had got all the alternate documentation to show that I was a returning citizen. These irresponsible people filed my shipment under “Non Transfer of Residence” without telling me and against my express instruction. After wasting 6 days getting alternate documentation from me proving my residence. When I asked them about it, till today 8 days later I still do not have a response. I was in a dilemma, if I try to change the documentation and avoid tax then the demurrage charges would amount to the same thing. I grudgingly paid as I had lost all confidence in Across paying a total tax amount of 1,27,000 INR (2000 SGD).
My total loss due to their utter negligence, laziness, apathy and just sheer and utter incompetence is approx. $4600. Save yourself the trouble and go for any other Relocation company. A hard mistake I have learned and I now have additional legal fees to look at as I will not let this travesty of justice slide.
I am now considering my options to pursue action against them in both SG and India and invite anyone who has had a bad experience with them to write in to me so we can do this jointly. However since I have left Singapore, it is tougher for me to take legal action that they are aware of as well as taking advantage of.
I have relocated several times to different countries and this has by far been my most frustrating, dishonest and utterly disgusting experience. Maybe one or two people have got lucky, but I would avoid them at all costsRead more
Their customer care, particularly Mr. Gerald from Singapore, provided excellent service, tailored to my needs and going above and beyond to ensure a smooth experience.
In terms of pricing, I compared quotes from five other relocation companies and found Across to offer the most competitive rate.
Overall, Across provided a highly professional and customer-friendly relocation service. Thank you.
We clearly told the importance of sorting things and keep the valuable safely before our team arrival. This was communicated verbally during the discussion, in documents, packing advice email well advance to the move date.
Whole issue and consequences happened due to the missing passport and liquor bottles in shipment.
Across Relocation will not be liable for the consequences of mixing up valuables in the shipment. You have reported to police on the missing passport to get new one in Singapore without mentioning about the currency in it.
It is very hard to clear liquor bottles in household and informed we are not responsible for high port storage due to delays with extensive examination and high duty on it.
We always looking forward to customer’s support and understanding for the smooth door to door process while handling their valuables.
We shipped in a dedicated container as per contract and there zero damages in the shipment.
Any way we t ake this experience positively to alert future India customers and we agree you had an unfortunate experience which was beyond our control.Read more
